This work examines the historical significance of the state of New Jersey in the Negro League legacy, especially the black baseball players, teams, owners and managers, and their struggles against not just segregation, and their accomplishments. The book includes photographs, appendices (records of New Jersey Negro League teams, 1923–1948, and a chronology), notes, a bibliography of research sources, an annotated list of suggested further readings, and an index.

An educator since 1951, Alfred M. Martin has served as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in New Jersey. He has previously written books about Mel Ott, sports history and education. A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, he lives in Parsippany Troy Hills, New Jersey.

Alfred T. Martin is a member of the Friends of the Hall of Fame, the Society for American Baseball Research. He is president of Martin Automotive Inc., in Pine Brook, New Jersey.
