 Two new books published this week, The Iconic Obama, 2007-2009, and Redcoats on the Cape Fear.  Iconic Obama covers the sensational and iconic campaign and early presidency of Barack Obama and his effect on pop culture.  Redcoats is a history of the Revolutionary War in Wilmington, North Carolina and surrounding area, with over 100 eyewitness accounts of those events.

Two More New Books

Another two titles out, The Lost Battalion and the Meuse-Argonne, 1918, and Indian Placenames.  Lost Battalion chronicles the American soldiers that fought in World War I’s Battle of Meuse-Argonne, a 7 week long battle along a 25-mile front.  Indian Placenames is the newest edition of the two volume set that covers all the American Indian names used for places in the U.S. and how some have changed over time.

Two more titles released.

Two more new books in, The Joseph Paradox, and The Civil War Roster of Davie County, North Carolina.  Joseph chronicles the popular tale of the bible story including a look into the meaning behind the story.  Davie County was possibly reluctant to join the Civil War, and this book covers every man that ended up serving for Davie County.

New edition of Gunsmoke out this week!

The new two volume paperback edition of Gunsmoke is out this week.  Gunsmoke, the classic radio and TV show that gave America a sense of the fantastic West, has been reprinted to paperback, complete with 241 photos.  These two volumes gives insights into the pioneering of TV and radio and how it affected Gunsmoke, along with summaries of episodes and character quotes.

Two more books published this week, Mrs. Spencer Tracy and the John Tracy Clinic and Musicmakers of Network Radio.  Mrs. Spencer Tracy by Patricia Mahon is a biography of Tracy’s life of educating deaf children.  Musicmakers is a series of biographies on 24 different radio performers, and their lives in front of the microphone.

Fresh from the printer, new books!

Three more new books this week, De la Bourdonnais versus McDonnell, 1834, Walter Penn Shipley, and Perry Como.  DLB vs. McD is a history of the players’ matches against each other in the 1834 London Westminster Chess Club, which includes 85 different games played.  Walter Penn Shipley is a history of Shipley’s crucial part in the U.S.’s 19th and 20th century chess development.  Perry Como is a biography of the American singer and TV personality, including a year by year chronology of his life.

Two new books in for this week, African American Dance and The Tap Dance Dictionary.  African American Dance by Barbara Glass tells of how African slaves being brought to America did not lack culture, and they influenced mainland America with their dance.  The Tap Dance Dictionary by Mark Knowles gives a comprehensive list of dance moves and steps for tap dance, to aid teaching and learning.

Newly Published Books

Haig Bosmajian’s Burning Books and Donald Dewey’s Ray Arcel are two newly published books this week.  Burning Books gives a 2000 year history of the practice of burning subversive and heretical books.  Ray Arcel is a boxing biography telling of the life and travels of Ray Arcel, a boy from Indiana that moved to NYC and became a prominent name in boxing.

Dead on a High Hill

Another recently published book is Dead on a High Hill, Essays on War, Literature and Living by W.D. Ehrhart.  This collection of essays ranges from Vietnam War policies, and Korean and Iraq war experiences to mountain gorillas in Rwanda and teaching poetry to teenagers.  The book is a very smooth read from cover to cover, continuing easily from essay to essay.

Joining the Military (Book Series)

The fifth and final volume of Snow Wildsmith’s series of handbooks is now available.  Joining the Military helps young people who might be curious about serving in the military decide whether service is right for them, which branch is the best fit, and whether they are qualified for and prepared for service.  The handbooks walk a teenager or young adult through the enlistment and recruit training process: making the decision to join, talking to recruiters, getting qualified, preparing for basic training, and learning what to expect at basic recruit training.

2012 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards

Two of our titles have been nominated for the 2012 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research:

Richard Ackelson. Frank Sinatra: A Compete Recording History of Techniques

Bobby Whitlock with Marc Roberty. Bobby Whitlock: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Autobiography

The winners will be announced in August, and the awards will be presented during a banquet at ARSC’s annual conference in May 2013.

Hollywood Surf and Beach Movies

Tom Lisanti (author of six McFarland books including Hollywood Surf and Beach Movies) will be co-hosting, with Ben Mankieicz, Turner Classic Movies’ Spring Break Film Festival beginning Monday April 16 at 8pm through Friday April 20. Ben and Tom will introduce 19 surf and summer movies from the Sixties including Where the Boys Are; Gidget Goes Hawaiian; Beach Blanket Bingo; Blue Hawaii; The Girls on the Beach; Ride the Wild Surf; and a few in the snow such as Winter a-Go-Go.

Bobby Whitlock

The city of Austin, Texas, and Mayor Lee Leffingwell have proclaimed March 22 as Bobby Whitlock Day. All are invited, and events run from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at City Hall, 301 West 2nd Street. There will be news coverage and filming. At 10 that evening Bobby and his band will be playing at the Saxon Pub to continue the festivities.
