An excerpt from Fragments From Iraq, an Iraq War journal of a Navy Trauma Surgeon from 2005 to 2006 by Zsolt T. Stockinger.
Sunday: TQ Day 47.
We get an interesting patient at around 1500, a GSW to the arm and flank. Probably a single AK-47 round from a sniper; it went through his forearm and into his side, in the gap between his front and back body armor. The snipers are getting good out here, but it also tells you that we are taking fewer casualties if they have to be that good. The kid is lucky; the bullet tracked along his back and missed everything important, we didn’t even have to open his belly. Broken bone and bruised nerves in his arm, but those should heal. The interesting thing is his name, which sounded Nepalese to me, so I ask him about it. Nope, Tibetan. Right mountains, wrong country. He is a Tibetan Buddhist Mormon U.S. Marine born in northern India who lives in Salt Lake City. Quite the multinational force we have here. A melting pot of one.
